HANDLEBARS & STEM

Handlebars and stems shape how a rider loads the front wheel, stands through the gate, and moves over the bike. There is no single correct number for every rider; setup should support control and an athletic position.

01

Understand the measurements

Bar rise changes hand height. Width affects leverage and shoulder position. Backsweep and upsweep affect wrist angle. Stem length and rise change reach and front-end height.

02

Start near natural shoulder position

A useful starting width allows strong elbows and neutral wrists without forcing the hands excessively wide. Avoid cutting bars before the rider and coach have evaluated them.

03

Change one variable at a time

Small changes can feel significant. Record the original position, adjust one measurement, then have the rider test it in a controlled setting.

04

Torque and inspection matter

Use the component manufacturer’s torque specifications and tightening pattern. Inspect for movement, cracks, damaged clamp areas, and loose hardware before riding.
