Choose the correct helmet
Look for the certification required for bicycle use and follow the manufacturer’s sizing chart. Have the rider try the helmet on; do not rely only on an age range.
Position it correctly
The helmet should sit level—not tipped back—and should not block vision. It should remain centered and should not slide front-to-back or side-to-side.
Check retention and comfort
Fasten and adjust the chin strap exactly as directed. Padding should make even contact without painful pressure points. Do not add unapproved padding or modify the shell or retention system.
Know when to replace it
Follow the manufacturer’s replacement guidance. A helmet that has taken an impact may be damaged even when that damage is not visible; stop using it and consult the manufacturer.
