FLAT VS. CLIPLESS

Flat pedals are the correct starting point for new riders. USA BMX’s current public guidance says clipless equipment is for more experienced riders who meet age and proficiency requirements; always confirm the current official rulebook before competition.

01

Why flats come first

Flats let new riders learn balance, pumping, cornering, jumping progressions, and safe foot recovery without being attached to the bike.

02

Set up flats carefully

Use a suitable flat-soled shoe and a pedal that provides secure grip. Check pedal pins, bearings, crank threads, and shoe condition regularly.

03

Do not rush clipless pedals

A faster teammate using clips is not a reason to switch. The rider should have the required proficiency, maturity, technical foundation, and coach support.

04

Check the current rules

Rules can change. Review the current USA BMX rulebook and event requirements instead of relying on an old screenshot or memory.
